Heather's Hedgehog Hostel is a charity that specialises in providing rehabilitation and comprehensive hedgehog care for Chatteris and the surrounding areas. We take hedgehogs into our hedgehog rescue service, nurse them back to health, and release them when they are back to good health. Find out more about founder Heather Johnson, and our dedicated Trustees, by clicking below.
The hostel is only able to do everything we do because of the generosity of the community. For monetary donations, any amount makes a huge difference, even £1 a week.

Heather spoke with The Mirror newspaper on Thursday 20th March to discuss the urgency and implications of the litter crisis, as well as scenarios we have seen and treated at the hostel. Read the full online article by clicking below!
This year. we have been working with the Family Volunteering Club to run some activities for young families in Fenland. We have already completed one day in Chatteris, where we built Hedgehog Hidey Holes for the families to take and position in the gardens or local green spaces. In April, we are running another session for young families to make starter packs for people who suddenly come across hedgehogs in their gardens, and we are also going to run a session in Gault Wood in April, to get people thinking about nature and how we can look after it!
We had a whopping 466 hedgehog come through the doors of the hostel in 2024, with a 77% release rate! This is all thanks to the trustees, dedicated volunteers and the whole community for your valued contributions. We start 2025 with 27 hedgehogs on our books (11 foster hogs and the rest are located at our garage site).
We are so incredibly proud and humbled to have saved and released this many hedgehogs within 2024, and with everybody pulling together, this has been made possible. Thank you everybody!
We are looking for volunteers who are crafty in every way of the word! If you are interested, please click below and let us know your availability.
We are so very excited to announce that Heathers Hedgehog Hostel has been nominated for an award at the Animal Star Awards 2025! We will post further updates soon once voting commences and more information is released!
We are so grateful to have the support of many volunteers within our community who support us every day. Meet some of our inspiring team of hedgehog volunteers by clicking below!
In recent weeks, we have had a large amount of calls for help whereby one of our hard working volunteers will drive out of their way to collect a poorly hedgehog, as the finder could not bring it in themselves, only for the hedgehog to have passed, no longer be there, or it has been taken it somewhere else. In instances like these, our volunteers have paid their own petrol money and used their own time to help the hostel for an unnecessary trip. Therefore, please do not change your mind, or not inform us if the hedgehog has passed. Please call us and keep us up to date on the situation, so that we can instruct our volunteers if the visit is no longer required.
If you find a hedgehog, please follow the Bringing in a hedgehog advice on our website, call us, and bring them in during our opening hours when you can.
PLEASE READ: We kindly request that hedgehogs and donations are brought to Heather's Hedgehog Hostel within our opening hours below. This is a hospital for very poorly hedgehogs and we are not a zoo, so visits are not always appropriate. Therefore, if you are able to make us aware of your visit in advance, by calling us, then that would be ideal.
If you have any urgent questions or enquiries, it is best to phone us within our opening hours. For any out of hours support, please refer to our FAQ or Bringing in a hedgehog advice pages where we have a large amount of readily available advice. Thank you for your understanding.
