On Tuesday 8th April, our wonderful volunteers who help support the hedgehogs, provided training based on feeding infant hedgehogs, expected weights at certain ages, how to make our secret hedgehog replacement milk, and how to hold and feed them safely. All the little 'babies' are the size and weight of a week old baby. They also learned how to control the feed so only 1 drip of feed comes out at a time. Very tricky one handed. Everyone took home a kit to keep practising with. Fantastic day all round, and the volunteers gave great feedback describing it as "very interesting" and "what a joy!". Volunteers came away giving huge credit to Heather for providing the full training, with volunteers highly commending her dedication to their learning and understanding of the baby training. Thank you Heather!
Skye and Hazel took part in the Fen Boxes project going on in March recently. Skye made a box with Heather and Pico on the bottom shelf and the wild hedgehogs on the top! Hazel made a hedgehog information box. They have gifted them to me, so look out for them on windowsills and at our events! We also had a lovely art afternoon making bits for the sales table and learning dot painting techniques. A fun afternoon with friends disguised as helping!!
We are so thrilled to have a brand new incubator thanks to the donations of Chatteris Court Lees (£100), St Ives Rotary Club (£100), and some private donations which have helped to raise the £700 needed. Thank you so much to everybody, we are highly grateful for your contributions to our expanding requirements at the hostel.
UPDATE: Click link below for an exciting update as of 10th April 2025!
Chunky, a resident of the hostel for 94 days is finally being released after obtaining a serious strimmer injury. Click the link below to read all about Chunky's journey. from coming to us to release, in the latest blog post!
Already we have had 41 hedgehogs in the Hostel and it looks like our ‘quiet’ time is over. Not many hedgehogs have hibernated this year due to the warmer weather over winter. It needs to maintain a temperature of 3 degrees and below for 5 days and more for a hedgehog to hibernate, and there have not been many weeks when that has happened. Those that have hibernated have started to wake up, and a lot of them are hungry, so keep your eyes out for hungry and poorly hedgehogs that are out during the day.
All of our volunteers participate in a programme of Continuous Professional Development, making sure that they always keep on top their skills and knowledge. We have handed out certificates for Hedgehog care, levels 1 and 2, Microscopy training and parasite identification. We are also doing a course at the end of April with other hedgehog rehabilitators which will give everyone the opportunity to meet other rehabbers and learn from lots of others, as well as the course material.
Thank you for our kind donations of wet food, thank you to Mrs Hubbard for her donations and her wonderful knitted toys for the tombolas. Thanks also to the three kind gentlemen in the George Pub in Ramsey who overheard one of our volunteers and made on the spot donations too. We appreciate you all!
Our lovely gifts from Reception class at Benwick School. Heather and Pico did a talk there a few weeks ago and a lovely parcel and card arrived from the children! Thank you so much!
Wow! We are so excited to announce that we have been nominated at the Animal Star Awards 2025! We will post again when the public voting starts!
See the video above to view our brand new garage premises, and a huge massive thank you to everybody who was involved in facilitating this and setting the site up!
Heather appeared on ITV News on Friday 8th November to discuss hedgehog welfare and habitat conditions, and to build awareness of the lack of hostels in the area for the growing number of hedgehogs that are being brought in.
Heather speaks with That's TV to speak about our current capacity and our urgent requirement for new premises.
Look at our wonderful Post Box Cosy! This cosy was made by an incredibly kind and talent lady in our Chatteris community. We raised a whopping £75 on Friday 25th October standing beside the town's post box - thank you to all who visited us and took photos with it. We'd love to see your photos so feel free to send them in!
